Troubleshooting Guide: No Internet Connection

Common Causes:

  • Weak Wi-Fi signals or interference
  • Incorrect network settings
  • Router or modem issues

Troubleshooting Steps:

Step 1: Check Physical Connections

  1. Ensure all Ethernet cables are securely plugged in.
  2. If using Wi-Fi, verify that your device is connected to the correct network.
  3. Restart your modem and router by unplugging them for 30 seconds, then plugging them back in.

Step 2: Restart Your Device

  1. Restart your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
  2. Check if the issue persists after rebooting.

Step 3: Check for Internet Outages

  1. Visit your ISP’s website or call their customer support to check for known service outages.
  2. Use a mobile device with cellular data to check online outage maps (e.g., Downdetector).

Step 4: Run a Network Troubleshooter

Windows:
  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
  2. Click Network Troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
Mac:
  1. Open System Settings > Network.
  2. Use Wireless Diagnostics for Wi-Fi issues.

Step 5: Check IP and DNS Settings

  1. Open Command Prompt (Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux).
  2. Run ipconfig /all (Windows) or ifconfig (Mac/Linux) to check your IP configuration.
  3. If using a static IP, ensure it matches your network settings.
  4. Try using Google’s public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) in your network settings.

Step 6: Test Network with Ping Command

  1. Open Command Prompt or Terminal.
  2. Type ping 8.8.8.8 and press Enter.
    • If you receive replies, your internet connection is active but DNS may be failing.
    • If you get timeouts, there may be an issue with your connection.

Step 7: Disable and Re-enable Network Adapter

Windows:
  1. Open Device Manager > Network Adapters.
  2. Right-click your network adapter and select Disable, then Enable.
Mac:
  1. Go to System Settings > Network.
  2. Turn Wi-Fi off and on or disable/enable Ethernet.

Step 8: Update Network Drivers and Firmware

  1. Visit your device manufacturer’s website to check for driver updates.
  2. For routers, access the admin panel and update the firmware.

Step 9: Reset Network Settings

Windows:
  1. Open Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings.
  2. Click Network Reset, then restart your computer.
